THE LIGHT OF THE PAST INTO THE FUTURE

Maria Alvarez Echenique

23 September 2023 to 30 November 2023

Maria’s ceramic works explore various cultural artefacts, often mixing contrasting cultural and historical influences, references and attributes such as heritage, identity and gender.

This plays with the perceptions of the viewers by presenting artworks with unexpected and unusual combinations, where fiction and historicity collide, resulting in a cultural time warp where objects and craftmanship of the past may meet contemporary and futuristic elements, representing and exploring our links to the past, the present and the future.

For this particular display the main influences are Jomon culture Dogū (from prehistoric Japan) and Pre-Columbian figurines from Central and South America. These are the launching pad from which the artist’s imagination takes flight, incorporating aspects of the natural world, and visions of the future.

Her craft techniques include throwing and and hand building, exploring the use of clay in its more primitive form, using ancient firing processes such as smoke firing to achieve specific combinations of natural colours, without the use of glazing materials.

Material qualities are intensified by the traces of the fire, utilising the elements of water, air and earth in the form of clay in all their infinite variety, producing results with earthy colours and patterns giving a unique character, form and beauty to the pieces.

Clink Street ‘88

Clink Street Ceramics / James Sims

July to September 2023

We are pleased to present a new display that will run through the summer. Titled “CLINK STREET ‘88” the display shows my new work exploring the Acid House raves that took place in Soho Wharf in Clink Street through the summer of 1988. The display on #clinkstreet shows a range of this work and it has lead to wonderfully interesting conversations with people who were there in ‘88.

If you are in the area of #boroughmarket or the #southbank please come and visit the display!

Through the summer of 1988, in a basement in Clink Street, an unlikely series of Acid House raves and parties changed the face of youth culture in the UK. Taking place beneath the then derelict Soho Wharf, only a few meters back from the Thames foreshore, the series of “RIP Parties” were the birth place of Acid House music in Britain and for many it was the first time they had heard this music.

Clink Street ‘88 is a project whose aim is to celebrate this important cultural event. Responding to this rare example of euphoria, and in recognition that the spontaneous and unplanned can sometimes lead to remarkable things, this series seeks to reflect on the experiences ravers had, and how momentarily the urban landscape of this secluded part of London changed from a disused wasteland into a pleasure-ground of music and joy.

The summer of 1988 was often referred to as “the second summer of love” – raves across London brought people together from all walks of life in a type of cerebration that hadn’t been seen before. These events in Clink Street have been overlooked from mainstream historical research and their significance deserves recognition.

Discovered through archival research, a series of ceramic transfers are used to share memories and experiences.

HOLDING GREEN

Marielle Hehir

April 2023 to June 2023

Marielle is a painter, living and working from her studio in London. Holding Green showcases her ceramics practice in a project designed especially for plants. Her work in ceramics stems from her painting practice, combining a love for working with her hands and the tactility of clay. The wares Marielle creates are built by hand using the ancient method of coil building. This slow process imbues the pots with care, as well as the signs of their making.

Inspired by the colours and phenomena to be found within the natural world, the pots are hand painted with glazes, layering thin washes of colour which seep into one another and create areas of transparency and opacity. This collection is made for plants, an act of care towards nature. The pots create homes for plants, holding them steady while they grow and thrive.
